Tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium mycobacterium tuberculosis which typically causes an infection in the lungs but can also cause infection in the brain and other parts of the body. It is spread when a person breathes in infected droplets. Symptoms include fever, cough, poor appetite and weight loss. Antituberculosis medications are given for 2 to 6 months depending on whether or not the disease is active. A person is rarely infectious after 1-2 weeks of treatment.
